Good mix of abstraction, details, and narrative all in one, and beautiful illustrations
This book really is beautiful – the author/team did an honestly impressive and expert job in putting together a narrative that runs with abstraction to describe cultural details too. So it is kind of a hallucinatory, “all at onceness” of a bit of philosophy and history and narrative that is also reflected in the beautiful illustrations as well. I really do find it neat and it’s good for pretty much any type of reader (or most), which I’m sure was part of the goal. I think there was definitely a missed opportunity to include more on Indigenous cultures, and I do wish the pages were glossy rather than construction paper-y.Also- the cover glows in the dark and looks really beautiful!

Well packed. Inside the package, it was enclosed in a beautiful gift/storage box. My only disappointment was that it lacked the author’s signature. Very nice gift came with it. Well worth the price for a very collectable book.

Am I the only one that’s a little disappointed? Maybe I was expecting too much. Forget the elephant in the room, the art in this sequel is not close to the original. Although it’s highly detailed and very creative, it looks like it was done in a rush. I don’t see the humor or the hidden references. Most of it looks like it was colored with pencils. And maybe it was just me, but I think for the subject matter, the art didn’t show the inspiration it deserved. The story just didn’t grab me. It seemed over personalized on a fictional character that I had no emotional interest in. And considering it, it’s premise of being after the destruction of earth. It seemed a little bit dark to make it such an odd human avatar. If they were looking for empathy, I didn’t find it. I would’ve preferred an aliens perspective. Especially considering that’s who character refers to throughout the book. The knowledge that they impart is interesting, but mostly generic. Just my thoughts. I was happy to spend over $100 for the first one. In fact I bought one for my daughter as well. This is a $40 book as far as I’m concerned and 20 of that goes to the printing press.

I have never seen such an amazing, beautiful, work-of-art of a book in my entire life. This book is completely unique. And stunning in every detail. Not just a coffee table book. A book worth reading and savoring. A treasure and a keepsake.This book arrived in a big, protective gift box that had artwork on it as if it was mailed directly to me, complete with interesting painted stamps. The book inside is very large, at 13 5/8” x 9 3/8”, and very heavy. The cover has an interesting, tactile texture, almost like it’s printed on canvas, which would make sense for the art masterpiece that this book is. The interior pages are also very thick with almost a cloth-like Quality. Yeah, Quality with a capital Q is the word for it! There are 380 of these thick pages, which explains the weight of it.From the very first page, I was swept up by the story. The narrator writes in the first person, so it feels very intimate as we are reading his diary and feeling his emotions. The story is captivating and personal and heartfelt and also heart-wrenching at times. The sci-fi lover in me ran a whole movie in my head visualizing the calamity. I could see in my mind the ship with this last human being lovingly laboring over this tribute to the glories of the now lost human race. Along the way, he’s got me laughing so hard at the things he says. Like: “Who the h-ll am I writing to? I just ended a sentence with a preposition. It’s over for me.” As a former English Major, I found that absolutely hilarious! There’s some type of hilarity on almost every page, sometimes just from reading his judgments and opinions and irreverent explanations about things.Every page of this book is a treat to savor. The pictures take a long time to absorb fully. I had to slow down to ingest every inch of the page because there were new discoveries to see everywhere. It’s drawn like a collage of images running from one to the next, telling a story all on their own. The artwork is all done by hand with pen & ink, colored pencil, and a little watercolor. And it’s masterful artwork. Realistic, very-well drawn, sometimes cartoonish, and fascinating to look at. You should have seen the look on my face when I came across pages torn out of the book. Yes, literally, pages were intentionally torn out and torn in half to send me into shock. How did they mass-produce this book that way? Oh, I’m so impressed!This book is also a mind-opening education. How did this guy know all this stuff? But I have to thank him for sharing his knowledge with me, because I’m learning so much reading through this book. The topics are far-reaching, covering every possible subject and some that hardly anyone knows about. Tripped me up discovering that the Table of Contents was at the very end of the book. I’ve got to say, this book is so entertaining. It’s a real adventure to experience. I wonder how long it took to actually create this book. Must have been a long time. I’m just amazed.
