NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The first published collection of photographs by the icon of street style, bringing together favorites published in The New York Times alongside never-before-seen work across five decades.
“A dazzling kaleidoscope from the gaze of an artist who saw beauty at every turn.”—André Leon Talley
Bill Cunningham’s photography captured the evolution of style, of trends, and of the everyday, both in New York City and in Paris. But his work also shows that street style is not only about fashion; it’s about the people and the changing culture.
These photographs—many never before seen, others having originally appeared in The New York Times and elsewhere—move from decade to decade, beginning in the 1970s and continuing until Cunningham’s death in 2016. Here you’ll find Cunningham’s distinctive chronicling of the 1980s transit strike, the rise of 1990s casual Fridays, the sadness that fell over the city following 9/11, Inauguration Day 2009, the onset of selfies, and many other significant moments.
This enduring portfolio is enriched by essays that provide a revealing portrait of Cunningham and a few of his many fascinations and influences, contributed by Cathy Horyn, Tiina Loite, Vanessa Friedman, Ruth La Ferla, Guy Trebay, Penelope Green, Jacob Bernstein, and a much favored subject, Anna Wintour. More than anything, On the Street is a timeless representation of Cunningham’s commitment to capturing the here and now.
“An absolute delight.”—People

Great Addition For A Personal Library
Bill Cunningham: On the Street is a remarkable time capsule of American life and fashion, showcasing the work of a deeply observant and underappreciated talent. Cunningham’s photography captures the essence of both everyday style and extraordinary trends, celebrating the creativity and individuality of people from all walks of life. His unique perspective reveals that fashion is not confined to runways but exists vibrantly on the streets. The book itself is substantial and beautifully bound, featuring a compelling mix of color and black-and-white photography that highlights Cunningham’s keen eye for detail. It is both a visual and cultural treasure, perfect for those interested in the intersection of art, history, and style. This collection ensures Cunningham’s legacy will inspire and resonate for generations to come.

Beautiful photography throughout the decades
Absolutely gorgeous photos of folks throughout the decades and different fashion styles. I use it a ton as a reference book for illustrations!

Gorgeous wonderful book!
I love this book. I liked looking at five decades of fashion. I could remember all those looks. I remember reading about the people. It was just pure fun to look back. I first got this book from the library. I loved it so much that I had to own it. I highly recommend it to any person who lived through the era or any person curious about the era or the fabulous Bill Cunningham.

Creative photography
It was such a pleasure to look at these original and really creative photos by Bill Cunningham over decades. He was one of a kind. Nobody could put impressions (and outfits) together as he did. He created meaning through his photography–not just patterns and aesthetic pleasure (but that too!).The format of the book really made his art “shine.”

Cute and interesting book
I bought it as a decor book. It is smaller than I thought, but enough to make a good presence in the decoration I expected!

Love looking back at Bill Cunningham’s photos and comments in his days at NYTimes.

Great photos and lots of them. Beautiful book, honoring an amazing photographer.
The photos are excellent and all interesting and colorful. The writing is so-so, and sometimes it’s difficult to figure out which photo the caption pertains too. Nevertheless, I am enjoying it and have several friends waiting to borrow it. Good gift for a lover of fashion and/or Manhattan street life.

Bought this for a gift. Lost it in my office. Hopefully I find it soon.
I bought this as a Christmas gift last year but couldn’t find it once I started wrapping gifts. Decided it would be a great birthday gift. Still couldn’t find it so I had to buy something else for a birthday gift. As February rolled around I thing how great it was I already had a Valentine’s Day gift to give. Alas, I still couldn’t find the book. I hoping I find the book soon so I can give it as an anniversary gift. If not it will make a great Christmas gift this year.
